The 2016 PCMA Chair Wants to Grow Global Engagement

First joined PCMA

1989

First volunteer leadership position with PCMA

Capital Chapter Program Committee in the early 1990s.

First — and lasting — impressions

I distinctly remember being intimidated when I saw the roster of folks who were going to be serving on that program committee. In my mind, they were the icons of meeting planning in Washington, D.C. As we’ve been working in the past few months on assigning volunteers to different committees, I’ve flashed back to that first committee, especially as we were looking at some of the younger or emerging professionals that have volunteered for next year on the headquarters committees. I was remembering that I used to be one of them.

We’ve made a concerted effort this year to make sure that every committee has at least one emerging professional, if not two or more — and we also ensured that those who have self-identified as global meeting professionals were spread out among every committee, so that each one will have a global viewpoint represented at the table.

It was interesting for me just to think back to my first committee assignment and how global in nature PCMA has become, but it also gave me a chance to remember how important volunteering on a PCMA committee can be because you’re working alongside the best and the brightest in the industry.

Goals as 2016 chair

I’m really focused on, how do we fully achieve the strategic plan that the board developed, going through the year 2016? I’m also really looking forward to working with the new board and helping them thrive in their new role.

Among the many aspects of the strategic plan that I really believe in is the pillar of building community and growing engagement within PCMA’s global community. In my role at ASH, developing the community is part of what I do. So at PCMA, I think of building a professional community in terms of cultivating the next generation of leaders and preparing them to lead PCMA into the future — and challenging those of us that have more experience to make sure that we’re being the best role models that we can possibly be for that next generation.

I also think that a community involves taking care of each other. How do we help a colleague when they have a moment of need? When someone isn’t quite sure of a situation, we want that person to know he or she can reach out to other PCMA members who can provide guidance, insight, ideas, or share some of their experiences. I’d also like to find ways that the PCMA community can better support our colleagues who have been laid off or lost their positions, perhaps putting some structure to programs that could help ease the PCMA member into his or her next opportunity.

It’s incredibly humbling to think back to the past PCMA chairs — many of whom I looked up to as role models and sources of inspiration — and think that I’ll be walking in their footsteps. I truly would not be in a position to serve without the influence that they had earlier in my career.
