Thought Leaders Aim to Spark Positive Discussion

A meeting is more than a meeting; it’s an opportunity for a group to experience something together. Today’s Thought Leader speakers are all about improving attendees’ leadership skills in a positive way.

Robert Biswas-Diener

Author and life coach Robert Biswas-Diener will speak from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. about “Courage at Work: Bravery as an Overlooked Resource,” exploring why courage is more than a physical act of bravery.

A psychologist by training and the author of The Upside of Your Dark Side: Why Being Your Whole Self — Not Just Your ‘Good’ Self — Drives Success and Fulfillment, Biswas-Diener specifically will discuss how to apply a positive mindset to your work. He focuses not on what is wrong with people, as is traditional in psychology, but what is right with people — and how to use that in an everyday setting.

“I want [Convening Leaders attendees] to come away with a 90-degree view of something that maybe they’ve been living with their entire life, something like happiness, but they’ve just never thought about it in this particular way,” Biswas-Diener told PCMA’s Convene magazine. “It might leave some of them scratching their heads or confused or whimsical or puzzled or curious, but I want them to have that feeling that they want to get up and continue the conversation with the people around them.”

Michelle Stacy

Do the leaders in your organization need inspiration? From 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., Michelle Stacy will discuss leadership strengths in “Five Strategies that Transform Innovation.”

Formerly the president of Keurig and an executive with Gillette, Stacy will detail strategies for engaging all the individuals on a team, making them much more effective. She’ll also discuss building teams that enhance the meeting experience.

“Great leadership and great innovation come when people can be themselves and share their humanity,” Stacy told Convene. “It comes when they respect and value all of their team members.”

Stacy will also be speaking at tomorrow afternoon’s Women@Work forum. “My career path involved being part of a dual-career family,” Stacy said. “What are some of the compromises as you build a career, and is a dual-career, full-time working arrangement the right thing for you?”
